instructor: kerry da silva cox

Big Sky is excited to present its first Summer Art Intensive program for High School students in Grades 10-12 (or equivalant - ages 15-18) in Summer 2021 in Hudson, New York. Sessions will be offered in person and spaces will be limited to comply with CDC guidelines. In this two week program, we’ll build a cohort developing our work. The session culminates with a final celebration. We’re happy to announce that this will be an annual program in Hudson.

Course Details

The Summer Art Intensives are courses designed for high school students interested in pursuing the arts in a dedicated manner. The vibe will be somewhere between summer day camp and artist residency. The small nature of enrollment will allow the course subject matter to be tailored to the interest and experience levels of the students, but previous experience in the arts in some capacity is encouraged. We will look at art, learn skills, experiment, and discuss our work. Additionally, each offering will have a visit each week from a speaker working in the field - artist, gallerist, or curator - to increase student understanding of roles within the field.

Week 1: Drawing

This course is designed for students looking to deepen their knowledge and understanding of drawing at an advanced level. Drawing will be instructed in the manner of a college Drawing 1 course while the afternoons are reserved for individual research with support and focused project development.

Week 2: 2D into 3D Mixed Media and Performance

In week two, we will build on the conceptual threads developed by the student in week one. We’ll begin by working with multiple materials on flat surfaces and move off the flat plane to begin an exploration in mixed media sculpture and performance. Looking look at artists that use bric-a-brac, natural objects, and more, we will experiment with interacting with our objects and documentation.
