(Re)Introduction to Drawing
Part I:
The Practiced Hand
Part II: Expanded Practice
Dates TBA for Fall 2022, Sept/Oct + Nov/Dec
About this course:
This course is designed for artists looking to strengthen or revisit foundational drawing and for new artists looking to study an introduction to drawing fundamentals. Part I: The Practiced Hand, will focus on traditional drawing materials and techniques. Lectures will be minimal as this is mainly a class addressing research through making and practice.
We will explore:
Perceptual line drawings of basic shapes and forms
Relative measurement
Composition
How artists have used these elements in historical and contemporary art contexts
Meditation techniques for aligning our skills of perception and observation.
What does all this mean? This is a foundational course about learning to draw what you see, and more importantly drawing as seeing. We’ll cover shapes, spaces, and objects, but we won’t cover the human figure here. This course will introduce you to new skills if you consider yourself a “non-artist” and will build on or revisit what you know if you are a practiced maker/draftsperson.
Like professional dancers always returning to the barre or the seasoned runner performing routine stretches, foundational drawing seems to have a place in many artistic practices. I’m here to help bring you back to the basics.
Part II will focus on expanded definitions of drawing, applications in other disciplines, and non-traditional techniques and practices. Dates TBA but will start Sept of 2022.
