About this course:
In this course we systematically study the 5 elements: air, ether, fire, water, and earth. Drawing from vedic texts and sankhya philosophy, we will explore how these elements appear in the body and in the world and how artists use/have used them to make impactful work.
This course covers:
Philosophical and scientific significances and properties of these elements
An introduction to Ayurvedic principles
Explorations of how artists have used these elements as both material and subject in historical and contemporary art contexts
Guided explorations and ways to apply and use these concepts in your own practice

A note:
Community is an essential componant of this course. We will be learning/talking/making together, so though we understand life happens, this is ideally not for the student who registers and wants to watch them all later. Recordings will be available to you, but to get the most out of this course and your cohort, being present is best.
About Your Instructor
Kerry da Silva Cox is a New York City-based visual artist and teacher with a diverse background. Kerry has worked with students from Pre-K through the undergraduate level and has worked with many NYC-based non-profits including Studio in A School, the Children’s Museum of the Arts, and IPCNY. She has been a student of yoga and mindfulness practices since she was a teenager. Kerry holds an MFA (‘13) in Visual Art and MA (‘14) in Modern and Contemporary Art, Theory and Criticism from Purchase College, SUNY, where her research centered on Brazilian Art under the dictatorship (1964-1985). She has performed and exhibited at various venues across the U.S. including the Museum of Modern Art, Berkley Museum of Art, and A.I.R. Gallery. You can check out her work at kerry-cox.com. Kerry currently teaches courses and mentors teen artists at Big Sky Workshop.
Guest Speakers
Lauren Noelle Oliver
Lauren Noelle Oliver is a New York City-based multidisciplinary artist and Big Sky Collective member who uses photography, filmmaking and performance to explore cultural collision, inspired by her own family’s multifaceted heritage. With a Puerto Rican mother and grandmother, Filipino father and Cuban grandfather, Lauren was directly exposed to multiple cultures in her childhood home. Her work examines her family’s dynamic, often highlighting the differences and similarities across those varied cultures and the lingering effects she has discovered in her adulthood.
Maxine Flasher-Düzgüneş
Maxine Flasher-Düzgüneş is a hybrid artist and Big Sky Collective member wandering between San Francisco, New York, and London. She is a writer for Dance Art Journal (with past commissions from Sadlers Wells, The Place, and Rich Mix London) and a future Djerassi Resident Artist. Her dance films have been screened worldwide with kNOwBOX Dance Film Festival, Sans Souci Festival of Dance Cinema, FilmFest by Rogue Dancer, SzólóDuó International Dance Festival, and room83spring.
